Browser Requirements

Kea Rich Text Editor requires:

  • Internet Explorer >= 5.5 (Windows only), or
  • Mozilla >= 1.3-Beta on any platform.
  • Any browser based on Gecko will also work, provided that Gecko version is at least the one included in Mozilla-1.3-Beta (for example, Galeon-1.2.8).

Using text from other Word Processing programmes

(eg: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, Open Office)

Using text which has been formatted in other programmes can lead to the formation of "morons" in the editor. Morons are the funny squiggles and symbols which can appear instead of apostrophes, quote marks, long em dash etc.

To avoid the formation of morons it is first necessary to remove any exisiting formatting from the text.

  1. Open up the Notepad text editor on your computer
  2. Paste in the formatted text
  3. Copy the text from the Notepad document you have formed
  4. Paste the text (now minus any formatting) into the editor window
  5. Format the text using the editor.

Tips for using the Editor

The editor uses quite a lot of RAM, so if you have been editing your images, you might be better to reboot before you start. If you have problems with things not doing what you expect, then again a reboot is often the answer.

The editor uses styles for formatting the contents of your pages. Highlight the text to be formatted, then chose a style from the drop down list.

There are heading styles, which vary from Heading 1 (largest) to Heading 5 (smallest). Heading 5 doesn't usually do anything except bold the text. You can also format the text using the formatting buttons for bold or italic and the alignment and list buttons.

Remember to Save your changes before you exit or they won't stick.

Images

  • Uploading Images - the image upload window is resizable. If you can't see the browse or upload buttons, grab the edge of the window and make it bigger.

    - click on the insert/modify image button, a popup window appears
    - click the upload image tick box to bring up the browse input field
    - click the browse button to browse for the image
    - fill in the other parameters for the image in the popup
    - click "Apply" to upload the image and preview it
    - click "Save & Exit" to save the image and close the popup.
  • Modify an existing image -
    - click on the image to select it
    - click on the insert/modify image button
    - you can then modify the image in the popup window
    - click "Apply" to apply the changes to the image
    - click "Save & Exit" to save the changes and close the popup.

Using editor buttons

  • Buttons for copy, cut & paste only work in Microsoft explorer at present. In Mozilla based browsers use ctrl + c, ctrl +x, ctrl + v to copy, cut & paste.
  • Toggle source button - This button allows you to edit the source code of your document. It is recommended only for advanced users.
  • Insert/modify a link - highlight the text to be linked, then click on the insert/modify link button. Type in the required url, add a title if you wish, specify a target and click "ok".

Insert a link

  • Make a list - highlight the text to be made into a list and click the button. Alternatively click the button first, then begin typing the list. To make a new list item, press enter on your keyboard. To finish the list, press enter twice.
