The favourable New Zealand exchange rate has certainly added to the incentive for overseas clients to use Katipo Communications. Our experience working at a distance, both from our clients and each other, places us uniquely to cope with long distance work. Many of our staff are well travelled, and have been able to schedule site visits while overseas on vacation.

Pathfinder Library Systems in Grand Junction, Colorado had a modest budget by local standards, that translated well into $NZD. We worked over a number of months with John and the team, putting an attractive design to their Aleph Library system. This is now in use in their libraries, so if you're in Grand Junction, feel free to visit.

Aspen Pathfinder

This was a project undertaken by Pathfinder Library Systems to test whether historic newspapers held on microfiche could be digitised. Katipo worked with Pathfinder, Waikato University and digitisers to get the papers available on the web. We used a structure consulting process, supplying designs and getting feedback to get something suitable for a US audience. We used a lot of IRC (Internet Relay Chat) meetings to discuss the project.

Unfortunately the quality of the original scans onto microfiche was very poor, and the OCR process was unable to get more than about 20% of the words off the pages (and almost all of those ads!). Because of this the site hasn't gone live. The lesson for anyone photographing or scanning is "make sure they are flat!".
