K oha Libraries

We have carried out a range of work with different libraries, both in New Zealand and overseas, from designing websites and customising OPAC interfaces through to our development of Koha, the world's first Open Source Library System. We have worked with other library system vendors (Geoweb, Bookplus, Aleph and Carl), always working in a professional and confidential manner when dealing with other systems.

Koha

Koha began as a project for Horowhenua Library Trust, meeting their need for a library system that would run on inexpensive computers over a standard telephone line. The system was first developed to meet a Y2K deadline, but work didn't stop at the change of century. Now Koha is in use all over the world. Katipo has sold it's Koha Division, so technical work will be done by Liblime, but we're still happy to provide design and HTML skills.

The Business Capability Partnership works on the principle that sharing knowledge is the best way of improving capability. All papers they develop will be published. The library contains the documents completed so far.

Directory of New Zealand Libraries

Katipo has put together a design for an existing National Library database project. The design incorporates a searchable map section as well as a text search abiltiy.

Details of libraries in a given area can be brought up by clicking on an area of the  map, or by using the text search fields on the page.

The Fred Hollows Foundation

The Fred Hollows FoundationLibrary type: Special

The foundation decided on a Koha appliance for their library system. Their corporate library is accessible only to members of their organisation inside their network, but is supported remotely by Katipo.

Horowhenua Library Trust

Library type: Public

Katipo has had a long standing relationship with the Horowhenua Library Trust, and prior to that the Horowhenua District Council. In the past we have provided network support, assisting them onto the internet, providing training and setup of public access terminals. In 1999 we undertook development of a new library management system for them, and Koha was born. Koha has since been released as open source software and is being taken up by libraries around the world. Koha is a comprehensive system, providing the library catalogue, membership records and management, acquisitions and budgeting, issues and returns, fines and till reconciliations and a stock management system. Koha won both the 3M Innovation in Libraries award and an Interactive New Zealand award in October 2000.

Most recently we have been working on the libraries' website and adding member services to Koha.

Kapiti Coast District Libraries

Kapiti Coast District LibrariesLibrary type: Public

The Kapiti Coast District Library Service plays a key role in the social, economic and cultural wellbeing of the community. The libraries are located in Paraparaumu, Waikanae and Otaki. Kapiti was the 3rd public library in New Zealand to go live with Koha.

LIANZA

LIANZA

Library type: Document manager

The Library & Information Association of New Zealand Aotearoa: Te Rau Herenga o Aotearoa (LIANZA) is the professional organisation for the New Zealand library and information services sector. They have an online library from which documents can be downloaded.

Local Government New Zealand

LGNZ

Library type: Corporate

When working on their website redesign, LGNZ came to us with the problem "How can we upload a vast array of resources, without having to build a massive site structure". We suggested hooking up their content management system to the library system to work as a digital document publishing system. Items are created and uploaded in the CMS and then catalogued for easy retrieval in the library catalogue.

OPUS

OpusLibrary type: Corporate

The OPUS corporate library is typical of many large corporate libraries. They have a very large collection of serials, journals and periodicals. Not happy with the way their current system managed these items, we worked with them to develop a new serials module for Koha that handles subscription management, routing lists and claims.

Rangitikei District Libraries

Rangitikei District Libraries
Library type: public

The second public library to go live with Koha, Rangitikei have been using Koha since the middle of 2005. With several branches spread out over a large area, Rangitikei needed a system that was able to work over all types of links, including rural modems. Koha fits the bill perfectly.

UNIDO Library

Library type: Special

The United Nations International Development Organisation provides resources to improve the living conditions of people and promote global prosperity through offering tailor-made solutions for the sustainable industrial development of developing countries and countries with economies in transition.

One of their services is a library which now uses Koha. The conversion involved an initial trip to Vienna, but development and support is provided from New Zealand via the internet.
